FAQS: Frequently Asked Questions Below you will find a list of the questions we receive most often. If your question isn’t answered below, feel free to contact us by phone or email. We look forward to hearing from you!
Is this a private school? Are the classes accredited? No and no. Katy Homeschool Classes is not a private school, and your child is still a homeschool student. However, students enrolling in our homeschool classes enjoy the best of both homeschooling and traditional schooling! Parents love the fact that classes are taught by knowledgeable teachers, so challenging subjects such as science, math, and writing are no longer a struggle. Students love the opportunity to socialize with their friends on a regular basis and experience many positive aspects of school life such as lunch with friends, the discipline of homework, and learning accountability to adults other than mom and dad. How can these subjects be taught just twice a week instead of five? Our classes are complete academic programs. Your child is able to attend class just twice a week for the reasons listed below: * Our classes are much smaller than traditional public school classrooms. With only 6-9 students per class we are able to complete routine tasks (such as attendance) much more quickly. * Our teachers rarely need to interrupt class time because of problem behaviors. We do not accept students with a history of discipline problems, and students who cannot follow classroom rules are not accepted into the program after their initial probationary period. * Our students do not take the TAKS test (only public schools participate in state exams), so our teachers do not use valuable class time to practice for this test. * Much of our students’ learning occurs at home through homework assignments monitored by the parent. Do you accept every student who applies for admission? No. We are a small homeschool program and are selective in our admissions process. Students who have attended public/private school within the last three years are required to submit a transcript indicating there has been no discipline actions against the student. In addition, all new students are accepted on 6 weeks probation. If the student demonstrates good social and academic behavior during the probationary period, then that student will be formally admitted into the Katy Homeschool Classes program. Are these homeschooling classes taught from a religious perspective? No. We do not use religious curriculum and families of all faiths are welcome to enroll. Nothing will be taught in class that knowingly offends Christians or persons of other religions. Note: This year our Life Science and Biology texts do include a section on evolution and our history encyclopedia has a section on early humans, but these topics will not be taught in the classroom. We encourage parents to educate their children on this topic as they see fit. Are we required to follow the age/grade requirements for each class? We understand that all students learn at different rates. Individualized instruction is what makes homeschooling so wonderful and classroom instruction such a challenge! Socialization is an important aspect of Katy Homeschool Classes, and while older/younger classes may fit your children’s academic needs they may not meet their social needs. In addition, if your child is highly gifted or struggles with academics because of a learning difference, your child may be more successful with one-on-one instruction from a parent or tutor. If you feel strongly that your child would benefit from an class that is more than 1 year older or younger, please contact us before enrolling. Looking ahead, what science and history classes will be offered for the 2009-2010 school year (and beyond)? * (2006-2007: General Social Studies, General Science) * (2007-2008: World Geography, Physical Science) * 2008-2009: World History 1 (ancient to Middle Age), Biology/Life Science * 2009-2010: World History 2 (Renaissance - US Civil War, including TX & US history), Earth Science, HS Chemistry (tentative) * 2010-2011: World History 3 (the modern era, including TX & US history), Physical Science, HS Physics (tentative) * 2011-2012: World Geography, Biology/Life Science, HS Government/Economics (tentative) * 2012-2013: World History 1, Earth Science, HS Chemistry (tentative) How do the high school classes fit into a 4 year high school plan? Colleges want incoming students to have the high school credits listed below. These credits may be earned through homeschool classes (such as Katy Homeschool Classes), independent study, or dual-credit community college classes when the student is 16-18 years old.
